"Hansel and Gretal"

Image result for hansel and gretelThe film version of Hansel and Gretal was incredibly different than of the Grimm brothers version. The biggest difference was that in the Grimms version it was the stepmother who comes up with the plan to leave them in the forest since they are starving and won’t have enough food to keep her and husband along with the kids alive. In the film shows that the mother didn’t have this much cruelty. She is in fact upset with her children; yet, when she and her husband lose them in the forest, she feels the same pain as any mother would feel. She is the one who wants to go back and find them rather than the husband. He tells his wife that Hansel and Gretal would be impossible to find in the forest at night. In the tale, the husband gets walked all over by the wife and is very passive. In the film, he is much more level-headed. The Grimm brothers wrote the fairy tale and didn’t leave much information about the family dynamic other than the father was a lumberjack and that they were poor. The film sets up the family dynamic and shows the viewers the everyday struggles that Hansel and Gretal had to go through because they were poor. One major similarity was the strong female character. Gretal in both the film and fairy tale is the one who comes up with the plan to kill the witch and follows through. In the beginning of both, she is dependent on her brother to get them out of the situation but when Hansel is captured, Gretal is the one who has to step up.
